Good Governance Week

This year we are introducing a Good Governance Week during the week of October 13th – 16th.

This will include several activities designed to promote the concept of good governance within the provincial public service.

In conjunction with Good Governance Week, the OCR ran an essay contest for all Grade Six Social Studies students in Newfoundland and Labrador. The contest carried prizes for the winner and runners up. The OCR is pleased to announce the winner of the essay is Kelcie Parsons of Westport, NL. To read Kelcie’s essay, click here.

Congratulations Kelcie and all other runners up!

Citizens’ Representative Message

The vast majority of the work of my Office defies intricate planning. Our work is driven by and configured around the complaints citizens bring forward about their relationship with the public service. The preparation of a three-year Business Plan provides an opportunity for us to step back and take a look at broader issues which effect our work.

Our 2008-2011 Business Plan set out some broad goals for my Office. In the first year, 2008-2009 we enhanced our capacity to communicate with citizens about our mandate. This entailed reviewing and expanding the print material we have available for distribution. This year we want to take a look at our governing legislation to see if changes are required to enhance our efficiency. While me and my staff may have nascent views on possible changes to the legislation it is important that we hear from citizens and public officials. To that end we would like to engage in discussions with individuals who have constructive comments about possible changes to the legislation.

A consultation paper has been written by the Citizens' Representative Office concerning the changes to legislation, and can be viewed here.

Those wishing to provide written submissions can forward them to P.O. Box 8400, St. John’s, NL A1B 3N7 or by email at citrep@gov.nl.ca. Individuals or groups who would like to meet with me or my staff can arrange appointments by calling (709) 729-7647 or 1-800-559-0079.
